Pineapple No More

Pekan Nanas or Pineapple Town (in the local Malay lingua) is a small town lying midway between Johor Baru and Pontian on the west coast of Johor state... The town used to be the centre of the pineapple industry in the state in its heydays... However, with the decreasing acerage of pineapple in its vicinity, pineapple is no longer a major industry here... There are still some small pineapple estates and plots further away from the town...

The town is in the district of Pontian which is the pineapple growing area of Johor state.... Pineapple is still been grown in the district though not on a scale seen in the 1970s... There is nothing really to see in Pekan Nanas, besides the Pineapple Museum (known as Nanas Muzium) slightly out of town on the road to Pontian Kechil...

The New Town

Pekan Nanas has developed much since my last visit 40 years ago... All along the main truck road that lead from Pulai (in Johor Baru) to Pontian Kechil (on the coast), there are many new concrete building catering to a number of banks, shops and auto tyres and repair shops... Of course, you will be able to see a big "pineapple" on this main road midway thru the town...

The people of this small town are mainly Chinese Hokkien, and so are those living in the main towns in the Potian district... There is no particular industry here, and most fo the younger people have migrated to nearby Johor Baru and Singapore to work or seek their fortunes...

The Old Town

The old town is off the main truck road... It is a row of old "shophouses" which has seen better days... There are a number of eating shops selling hawker food and I would say that the prices are certainly cheap when compared to that of Kuala Lumpur or Penang... As a benchmark, a bowl of noodles goes for RM2.50 as compared ot at least RM4.50 in Kuala Lumpur...

To go to the old town, turn right at the traffic light where the big "Pineapple" symbol is... It is just a short street with shops selling a variety of household goods... There is even a barber shop, reminiscence of the good old days...

The road thru the old town leads to Gunung Pulai Recreation Park (about 17km away) and then to Kulai on the main north-south trunk road...
