A Bit of History
Surabaya is situated at the mouth of the Kali Mas River... It was first settled in 1275 and went by the name of Ujung Galuh... It was officially founded in 1293 when Raden Widjaja established the Majapahit empire... The city was established at the site of a legendary battle between a shark (sura) and a crocodile (baya) and hence the name changed to Surabaya...
The Mataram empire took over the city in 1625 and was later ceded to the Dutch in 1743... Under the Dutch, Surabaya grew and became the busiest port and city in the Dutch Indies... The Japanese took over in 1941 during World War 2... After liberation at the end of the War, Surabaya was the centre of Indonesian nationalism when the fight for independence from the Dutch started at Hotel Oranje (now the Majapahit Hotel)... The ensuring Battle of Surabaya resulted in the defeat of the Dutch and English and leads to the independence of Indonesia...
The City
Surabaya lies on the north-eastern end of the island of Java... It is the second largest city in Indonesia, after Jakarta... The city is divided into east and west by the Kali Mas River which flows across the city... Surabaya is the commercial and administrative capital of East Java with a thriving business and industrial centre and the province's largest port with its long maritine history...
Best Time To Visit
Surabaya has 2 distinct seasons... the dry season is from May to October while the wet season from November to April... The wettest months are December and January... Rain, if any, is usually in the afternoons... February is the coolest period when temperature can drop to about 26 degree Celsius while the highest temperature has been recorded at 33 degree Celsius in October... The average temperature is about 28 degree Celsius...
Surabaya has being more a destination for the business travellers rather than for the casual tourists... It lacks tourist sites other than its many monuments and statues as well as buildings which reflects part of its Dutch colonisation... there are also buildings of migrant Chinese architecture...
There are a couple of beautiful golf courses within 30 to 40 minutes drive from downtown Surabaya... Tourists visiting the city usually are on transit to Mt Bromo or Banyuwangi (by ferry to Bali island)...
If you have visited Surabaya, have you visited the following places...
Grahadi Building
House of Sampoerna
Joko Dolog Statue
Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque
Submarine Monument
Surabaya Zoo
Suryo Monument
The Red Bridge
The Kya Kya Kembang Jepun (Chinatown)

There are about 10 golf courses in the Surabaya and its vicinity, the oldest being Yani Golf Club with its hilly terrain and tree-lined narrow fairways... Many of the courses are within enclosed high class residential estates... The golf triangle within 15mins drive from downtown Surabaya includes Bukit Darmo, Graha Famili, Ciputra and Pakuwon golf courses...
If you are a serious or a casual golfer, Surabaya will be THE golf destination for you...
