Getting TO/AROUND: Budapest could easily set up a rail link to the international airport, but seems reluctant to do so.

On the plus side the trip by public transport takes about an hour and is quite smoothe.

Rattly old buses leave terminal 2B every 15 mins and trundle to the end of M3 subway line. The interschange involves a few stairs and passing some tatty shops - but hey your saving !

You will need seperate tickets for each section (bus plus metro) but as they are part of the normal public transport system, it will still cost you only 320 florints (about one euro 50 cent).

    What a bargain !

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are on a tight budget then see my other tip on connecting to Budapest from the airport.

The minibus service, organised by the airport is a good choice, as it is much cheaper than a taxi and much easier than using normal public transport, especially if you have a number of bags.

Buy tickets from the desk directly as you come through customs. Within 20 minutes they guartantee you will be on the road - to the doorstep of your hotel.

Coming back, you will need to book with them the day before.

At 3600HUF for the round trip (about 15 Euro) it represents fair value for money.

Transportation: Great system, but watch the tickets

Getting TO/AROUND: Budapest has one of the best intergrated transport systems I have ever seen.

Although some of the trams maybe a bit rattlly, they seem to turn up on the second and the routes seem to go everywhere.

I've heard it said that you are never more than 400 meters from a tram, bus or subway stop in Budapest.

The centre is not overly crowded by them either as many of the routes radiate from 'satellite' interchange points dotted around the centre or further out centered around subway stops.

You do however have to be careful about tickets. Some allow a change of route or transport, whilst others do not. Even on the metro one ticket only allows a short hop of 3 stations on one line only.

I especially like the opportunity to travel by the side of the Danube on both sides by tram - by far the best way to see such a great city.

Just back from Budapest and had to laugh at many of your comments and agree with them. The lady you mentioned in the spa elevator from1953. Well I think her mother was working there last week. Great page.
