Local Customs: Relying on the Swiss

  • Liechenstein has long relied on using the Swiss Franc as it's currency. It is a while since I have visited but as I remember the Euro is easily accepted as well.

    Local Customs: Retreat from Democracy...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Any country that moves away from Democracy in the 21st century normally has the wrath of the world community following it.

Liechenstein is an interesting exception to this rule. Whilst it used to score very highly (and still does) in terms of human rights and quality of life for its citizens, it has effectively ceased to be a democracy.

In March 2003 the voters of Liechtenstein approved a referendum was giving Prince Hans-Adam the right to dismiss governments, dismiss individual ministers, make judicial apointments and veto laws.

This seems to 'jar' a bit when you consider the freedom movements struggling to have their voice heard in many more repressive parts of the world.

A lovely little town. Great idea to add the crown to their flag. The special stamps are a plus also.
