Concrete monstrosity - Birmingham
Jurys Inn Birmingham: Concrete monstrosity Jurys Inn Birmingham Review
Show Prices

The building is one ugly mess of concrete. In it's first incarnation it housed British Telecom in Birmingham. When you look at the service areas or staircases, the ghosts of Dave and Mikey from accounts or Derdrie from the typing pool still seem to be hanging around. The utilitarian ceiling tiles also hark back to the dark ages.

It was converted into a 450 room hotel and known as the 'Chamberlain' for several years. Ultimately owned by an American company, the layout of the hotel looks across the pond for inspiration. The rooms are thus exceptionally large by European standards. Many standard rooms feature two double beds. This may be execeptionally useful when you consider the International Convention centre is just across the road. We all know what goes on at those photocopier trade fairs...eh ?

Taken over by the Jury's group, they have brought their Irish flair to running the place. They make good fist of it. Clean and effecient management.

Unique Qualities: Large rooms, and good views from the upper floors. From the 16th floor I could see all of Aston !

The 'corners of the world' buffet on the Lower ground floor does mass-catering in a buffet / canteen style. You too can mix up Italian, British, Indian and Chinese on the same plate for around 12 pounds at Lunchtime, or a bit more in the evening. Breakfast at nearly 10 pounds was poor in comparison.

Novotel in Brum - Birmingham

Novotel in Brum

Novotel Birmingham International: Best location in town ? Novotel Birmingham Airport Review
Show Prices

The Novotel is situated across the road from the terminal building of Birmingham International airport.

It is thus in an ideal location if :

a) You are a Plane-spotter or
b) Need a hotel for an early morning dept or late arrival.

Some more uncharitable souls might also add that if you really have to visit Birmingham for a business meeting or whatever then the hotel enables you to spend as little time in the city as is humanly possible.

Well run 4 star hotel

Unique Qualities: Part of a well established chain, nothing unique to report. Comfortable and clean.
