Peterborough United play in Division two at London road. They are famous for a number of things. They still hold an entry in the Guniess book of records for the most goals in a season, they have a rather odd nickname, a very odd manager and were recently nearly sued by Mrs Beckham.

They are called the 'Posh' which may refer to the way they looked when they first formed or it may have something to do with a nearby pub the Port Out Starboard Home. Either way the name stuck - although Victoria Beckham did think about sueing them for the use of the word 'Posh' recently.

The main entertainment at London Room is obviously a game of footie - but the antics of Barry Fry, no longer the manager but still chief clown should also keep you amused if the football gets a bit boring.

Equipment: Rattle, scarf, and sense of humour !

    Sports Travel: Golf courses
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Theme: Golfing

Peterborough only has three golf courses. Milton golf course is by far the 'poshest' but unless you happen to know a member - forget it.

Thorpe Wood Golf course has the honour of being the longest 'pay and play' course in the country at 7086 yrads from the back tees. I have played the course many times, and it has now nicely matured over the years. Designed (in part) by Peter Alliss the famous commentator, it is widely regarded as a good inland course. It is only really let down by the sixth and seventh holes - a big lake in the middle would help. The third fourth and fith by the river are all challenging affairs. Many regard the 17th as the finest hole on the circuit.

Orton Meadows (run by the same company) is very much the second public course. You are much more likely to be able to get a slot here. It is a very 'schizophrenic' course. Holes 3-8 thread their way between lakes, in a very American style affair. Your card is uually ruined after these monsters. The second half is however crammed into a much smaller place, where pars are common even for an awful golfer such as myself.

    A good walk spoiled ?

Sports Travel: Swimming in the open air
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Theme: Beach Activities

I've always wondered why people get out of an open-air swimming pool when it starts raining. Strange that.

The 'lido' in Peterborough was opened in the 1930's, as a Grade II listed building it has managed to survive to the modern day, and remains a great place to cool off and to sun-bathe. I loved it as a kid, but I havn't actually been there for about 25 years. Still, with my offspring loving a good splash. I may well re-aquiant myself with the venue soon

The lido is open from 9 am to 6 pm in May, June and September and from 9 am to 8 pm in July and August. Early morning swimming from 7.30 am to 9 am from mid June.

An interesting visit to your hometown. Peterborough seems like a very nice place to get lost

It's still there?? I remember swimming there in the 60's and 70's. I think I did a 20 mile walk to raise money for the "new" indoor pool round the back :)
