A place in need of a tramway (Palma) By Bus Review

The bus routes that extend out from the centre of Palma around the shores of the bay can get very crowded. Although they use modern 'bendy buses', which seem to depart at least every 10 minutes on workdays and public holidays and Sundays, it is often difficult to get the space to sit down.

With such a linear settlement pattern, and large numbers of non-car owning customers (tourists) the place is crying out for an effective tram system along the front.

I've seen things mooted in the local english-language newspaper but any development is probably a few years off yet.

UPDATE : NOV 2007 - it seems to be back on the agenda again, what with the new Metro line out to the university about to open. A scaled down affair might be just around the corner.

Developing as a low-cost hub By Plane Review

Palma airport is now being served by a good range of low cost operators such as EasyJet and BMIbaby. It's becoming increasingly the norm to book breaks in this way - and if you have your own villa then it's virtually essential.

It is however a German company that seems to be developing Palma as one of it's major hubs - Air Berlin.

They offer flights to virtually every airport in Germany, most of Spain and also routes to Stansted (london), a couple to Austia and one to Budapest. In addition they also are providing 'short hop' routes to places like Ibiza. Worth looking at their Special offers.

P.S They also have few frills like a free sandwiches and drinks.

Majorca's airport at Palma has undergone massive reconstruction over the past few years. Cynics would say they need all the room for when the Spanish coach drivers go on strike, or French air traffic control walk out over their croissant allowance - and thousands of holidaymakers are left stranded there.

What I do know is this : I have never walked so far from a gate until finally getting out of the airport. It is the only airport I've ever seen trollies provided to help you with hand baggage.

Nicely finished and clean however, I must admit.

From The airport - to all over the Island

If you are travelling in from Palma airport, then the Number one bus from the airport takes you directly to the Plaza de Espanya on the Northern edge of Palma city Center.

From there nearly all the city bus services depart for all over city, including all the hotel areas such as palma Nova and Platja de Palma.

You will also find not one, but two railway stations - one to Soller (see other tip) and another which heads north to Inca and Manacor. In addition some longer distance coaches leave from the road between the two stations or from the bus station about 300 meters away.
