Getting TO/AROUND: The water bus to venice from the airport costs 18 euro - but you can save a bit by only going to Murano. Either book a hotel there or get your transportation tickets (eg the 24 hour card) and travel onwards by Vaporetto.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you just ask for a bus to the airport at P.Roma they are likely to sell you 'Fly bus' at 3 euros.

Ensure you are ask for a ticket on the local bus (ACTV bus 5 from stop A7). It will cost you just a euro 10c. It will stop a few other intermediate stops and it might be a crush in rush-hour. Pay you money and take your choice.

The water bus service will cost quite a bit more.

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: There has been talk of building a metro in Venice for about 50 years. Things seem to be very much on the long finger at the moment. The proposed single line (and I do mean single as it would have passing places for trains on a single track) would stretch from the Airport to Murano and onto st mark's and the lido.

It may in time get built, but i wouldn't hold your breath.

I personally think a much better solution would be to run the line from the airport via Mestre, over the causeway and then down under the mud onto St. Mark's. That way you could close most of Saint Lucia railway station, transferring most of the causeway rail passengers onto the subway line. The re-development of the station would pay for most of the subway !
A stroke of genuis, I know. Doubt anybody will take any notice.

    NB.

i've since learnt that a tram network is being built around Mestre (the city opp venice on the mainland). It will run over the causeway, but it will not connect to the airport. With the new 'funicular type' tram aiding transport from the parking lots of of Troncetto to Pizzale Roma and the new bridge over to the station, it looks as if this area of Venice will become a massive transport interchange. If only they can figure out how to use the 'New canal' for it's original purpose of providing a short cut to St Mark's, then we may actually end up with some real benefits.

I don't know where I culled this mock-up of the St mark's stop is, but thanks to them anyway.

Alternatively, re-vamping the Vaporreto netwark would be a much better use of EU re-structuring funds.

By plane (and then into Venice): Ryanair's cheeky alternative

Getting TO/AROUND: Ryanair bill Treviso airport as 'Venice'. To be fair it is alot closer to Venice than many major cities are to their principle airport. It is also well connected to Venice by either a) a direct bus or b) a local bus to Treviso city (10-15 minutes) and a half hour train ride up to Sant Lucia train terminal in Venice.

Currently Ryanair fly to about a dozen non-Italian destinations around Europe from here. More may well follow.

It's still worth checjing out flights to Marco Polo airport, as the odd bargain can turn up - and you don't have to travel with Michael O'Leary's band of clowns.

    Vaporetto: Using the No1 vaporetto

Getting TO/AROUND: The number 1 Vaporetto zig-zags along the Grande canal. It is therfore not a great route to choose if you want to go anywhere. The locals use it purely as a way of crossing from one side of the canal to the other. If you have a transport pass then it is cheaper than spending 50cent on the tragetto (short gondala trip across).

It may however be useful if you are trying to cut down the amount of walking you have to do when trailing suitcases behind you. Always check out a hotel ocation before booking. If you can't manage from a nearby Vaporetto stop then it is going to cost you a small mortgage for a water-taxi.
