Last year (2004) the authorities at the Eiffel tower put up a skating rink ! Best of all , once you paid for the normal entry to the tower then the skate hire was free - now that's what I call a bargain.

I rather hopr that this will now become an annual fixture, it sounds a really cool (no pun intended) thing to do.

Theme: Extreme Sports

There has been an amazing range of 'odd' sporting achievements that have been conducted on or from the Eiffel tower. Perhaps you can think of something to add to the following selection :

Golf : Arnold Palmer drove off the second level in 1977

Stilt Walking : Sylvain Dornon got up to the first floor on a pair of stilts in 1891

Running : A bloke called Forestier won the first ever Stair climbing championship. He made the Second floor in three minutes 12 seconds ! - in 1905

Cycling : Pierre Labric rode down the stairs on a push bike in 1923 - and was promptly arrested

Bungee Jumping : A J Hackett dived off the second floor in 1987 - and was promptly arrested

Just plain Mad : A man on a unicycle made it up in 1958 and another hopped up to the first a year later.

Parachuting : In 1912 Franz Reichfelt tried to jump off the first floor in a "Parachute garment" - he promptly went 'splat'.

On the other hand two british lovers jumped off the top in 1984 and completed a 45-second flight landing gracefully in the Champ-de-Mars garden

What a great space. It might have missed out on being the venue for the Beach Volleyball at the 2012 Olympics but my son put it to a much better use.
