  • It's not often that Sourbugger is impressed with a Hotel in Paris, but I must admit this place turned out to be an excellent choice.

A four-star hotel, and quite traditional in it's look and furnishings. The family room we had was large by the Standards of Paris: a good bath, nice furnishings, a superb bed and very child-friendly environment (no sharp edges etc). Excellent view out over the local cemetery (if you like that sort of thing) and the Eiffel tower in the distance.

The public areas are a little small and lack a bit of atmosphere, the attached restaurant good but pricey. Excellent breakfast.

Unique Qualities: The terrace on the top floor (hence the name of the hotel) affords a great view out over Paris, and breakfast is served up here in the Summer. I would be willing to stay here again just for that experience.

Hotel Concorde Saint Lazare: Amazing Lobby, but pricey rooms   Check Rates

  • Hotel Concorde Saint Lazare

The Lobby, it has to be said, really blows your socks off. The sheer opulant luxury of the place with more mirrors, gold leaf, marble and crystal chandaliers per square metre than anywhere else i've ever been. According to the blurb it also has many leather fauteuils (but I don't know what they are...but hey, they sounds kinky)

It's worth just wandering up to the desk and enquiring about rates just to get a look at the place.

The receptionist let us have a look at a standard room. Whilst it was well presented and clean it was not exactly specaular. At nearly 300 euro a night I do expect hot and cold running chambermaids.

She also mentioned that a little bit of scouting around on the net should lead to you bagging a far more reasonable deal (i paraphrase her french slightly) than the standard rack rate.

    Superb location.

    Unique Qualities: The lobby.

Mercure Esplanade, La Defense: Bags of rooms

  • Most hotels rooms in Paris do not give you enough room to swing a cat in or drown a rat in the bath.

Many of the hotels at 'La Defense' are the exception to this rule. Bulit as the new business district with many flamboyant skyscrapers just outside the central area, La defense offers a very different view of the French Capital.

The standard room we stayed in had a sperate bedroom, toliet, en-suite, kitchette and lounge / office area. The standard of the fittings may not have been quite four-star, but it was certainly comfortable.

Whilst transport links are good, the hotels in this concrete jungle lack character, atmosphere and any real nightlife. Still, a cheap clean well-sized room is a cheao, clean well-sized room.

Unique Qualities: Being the business district you can get some great deals on rooms at the weekend or during the holiday period. We paid only 75 euro a night (per room) over the may Day bank holiday in 2006.
