I just thought this was a very cute location to stop and enjoy the scenery of the area. We had a delicious brunch that had every option we could have dreamed of. They have a lovely garden area in the center that I thought was gorgeous and a pond in the back. Beautiful area. You can sit on the back deck and soak in the view.

    Carnivores: The taste of giraffe...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Carnivores

As many of my friends and I were foreigner's, my friend's family decided to take us to a restaurant called Carnivore's to give us the opportunity to try some different African meats.

The restaurant was located near Johannesburg, probably 20 or so minutes out of town. I tried Giraffe, Wilderbeast, Kudu, etc. I have to admit, giraffe was really quite tasty, but I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a bite. There's a white flag upon your table, and they continue to bring different meat selections to your table on Maasai Swords and slice them onto your plate until you put your flag down in "surrender." The ambience is great and they even break into performances of cultural dances and festivities at different points throughout the evening. There are more typical food choices like chicken and beef for those less-adventurous souls. :)

Favorite Dish: This excerpt is from the website I've linked below:
"The Carnivore Johannesburg, adjacent to the Misty Hills Hotel is situated in natural surroundings overlooking the Krugersdorp hills. The entrance to the restaurant is by way of a thatched walkway through indiginous gardens and a spectacular water feature.

The central attraction of the restaurant is a large circular open fire with 52 converted Masaai tribal spears holding a variety of 10 different types of meat such as pork, lamb, beef, chicken, ribs and sausages and including such game meats as crocodile, zebra, giraffe, impala, ostrich, etc, gently roasting and waiting for you to begin your feast!!!"

Hello Gina! What an excellent page of South Africa! One of the countries where I want to return. I love your tips and photos (but I didn't like rooibois tea). Happy birthday from Finland!

Gina, lovely RSA page. The petting zoo place would be something my wildlife-loving daughter would enjoy. A note of etiquette. Which fork does one use when eating giraffe? : ) Very enjoyable page.
