Kampong Belum Baharu Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 35 photos

Belum-Temengor is estimated to be as old as 130 million years, making it older than the jungle of the Amazon or Congo.

Only Belum - the northern half of the forest reserve) has been gazette as a forest reserve while the rest are open for development. Temenggor in particular is facing considerable deforestation due to logging. Environmental organizations such as Malaysian Nature Society and the World Wildlife Fund have been lobbying both the state and the federal government to gazette the area as a park.

The Jah Jehai are one of the 19 Orang Asli people groups in Peninsular Malaysia. They belong Semang (Negrito) subgroup.

Jehai are generally of short stature with darker skin and have more curly hair.

The Jehai are semi-nomadic. Population estimates at around 1,250. The Jehai are expert trappers and hunters with blowpipes and poison darts.

Today medical, educational facilities and police protection are available to them. They are less mobile than in the past due to the gradual change from shifting cultivation to semi-sedentary agricultural cultivation. They collect fruits from the forest and hunt small mammals or fish. They also harvest rattan and bamboo, which has multiple of uses for the Jehai community.

The Jehai are animists believing in Black magic and superstitions. They fear the Karei; a malevolent spirit that brings death and disaster whenever taboos are broken. The headmen and witchdoctors (Tok Halaq) are an influential group of people in the tribe. They have their own spoken language, but this is slowly given way to Bahasa Malayu as the next generation are educated in their National Language

Jehai settlements are by the rivers and lakes located in the Jeli district of Kelantan and the Hulu Perak district of Perak. One such settlement is at the edge of the Temengor Lake located in the State of Perak.

Many Jehai families are gripped by poverty. Community development is poor in terms of healthcare and literacy.
