HI THERE STRANGER!
Something you won't hear from a New Yorker at all, New York city is a very friendly place and very rough at the same time, it all depends where you are, what you're doing, and what's going down.
Since 9/11 New York City has somewhat changed in the fact that most individuals avoid going to manhattan too much, but overall I would say things are much better, mainly in the security afforded to many public places, some restrictions however have been implemented since then, and the safety around time square has improved vastly, but after hours it's another ball game, and many places just carry on some old traditions.

I feel compelled to correct something. I need to defend my borough. Brooklyn is huge, and some areas are cut-throat, but many are absolutely lovely and every bit as diverse as Manhattan. No real real New Yorker avoids the outer-borough.
