Flights / Airports: Big Gay Al's Big Gay Airport
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: I don't know why, but around 2001, the officials of LA decided LAX needed a facelift. And by "facelift" I do mean all the superficial revisions the word implies, and not an overhaul. And it needs an overhaul.

But what we got instead, were the towering letters "LAX," shaped in the same style as the Hollywood sign, strategically placed at the front and back entrances of the airport. Wow, thanks, guys, 'cause, all those years, I'd been driving right past THIS FREAKING HUMONGOUS AIRPORT without the benefit of those three letters.

And we got glowsticks. There are 20-foot, for lack of a better word, glowsticks littering Century Blvd. paving the way to the airport. Why anyone thought it was necessary to treat our airport like a Vegas bordello, I couldn't tell you. Hence the name, for those who watch South Park, Big Gay Al's Big Gay Airport. If you follow the link to the official site, you'll get a sense of this on the main page.

LAX is probably my least favorite thing about LA. I call it the Pit of Hell. It is based on the urban planning of a donut. And the insane driving you always hear about mostly takes place here. When my friends come to LA and need a lift, I beg them to fly into Burbank, and I would rather walk over broken, sun-scorched glass to my destination than fly out of LAX.

If you must use LAX, park at Lot B at 111th and Lacienaga. At $8 a day, it's the cheapest, and with shuttles running every 15 minutes, you'll avoid the worst of the traffic.

On the upside, it has a groovy little restaurant featuring 60s lounge decor. It's easy to spot - it's the white spidery structure in the middle that you probably always thought was a control tower. Nope. Restaurant.

The Alcove sounds like a great tip Emile, thanks! However, I hate lines. Hmmm, although the red velvet cake and homemade marshymallows in three diff flavors just sounds too irresistable. =)
