Crypt Lake Hike and other Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada Things to Do Tips

The day-hike into Crypt Lake is rated among the best in North America, often as #1. Access to the trailhead is by boat across Waterton Lake in the morning, and pickup is later in the afternoon. The lake is accessed through the 100 m long Crypt Tunnel, and the view of Crypt Lake Falls at its exit was the highlight of the hike for me! The lake is surrounded by steeply rising mountains and drains through an underground creek and over a cliff. I've heard that a flashlight is handy through the tunnel if other hikers block the light from entering, but I didn't need to use mine. There were grizzly bear spottings by many hiker groups though. Travelling with a group is recommended for this reason.

Overnight camping is no longer permitted on this trail, or the trailhead, to protect visitors from the high number of bear encounters. You might be able to cruise the rest of the lake when picked up again by boat, if you can arrange it.
