Musée d'Orsay: A temple to Impressionism

People with only a passing acquaintance with the history of art, or of painting, will recognize many of the works in the Musèe d'Orsay. The 19th century building that houses its collection is itself worth admiring. What's inside is surely one of the great treasures of modern art. For this page I've selected three portraits and one work each by Cezanne and Manet -- none of them the most famous pieces by any of their painters, but illustrative all the same of the glories in this museum.

Looking at the plaster casts of victims of Vesuvius's eruption, over 1,900 years ago, is awesome enough. Those Pompeians, however, lived closer to the present than they did to the times of Egyptians who modeled for some of the statues in the Louvre. How many of the 'immortals' from our age -- Washington, Napoleon, Lincoln, Churchill -- will be known in any way 4,600 years from now? Photography is permitted in most of the Louvre (the Mona Lisa is one of the exceptions, though it wasn't 40 years ago), but using a flash is prohibited everywhere. That did not, alas, stop some heathens from popping away.
