End and Beginning | Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche |
Berliners have preserved the shell of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche's tower — the 1895 church was bombed out in World War II — as a reminder of the insanity of armed conflict.
Actually, it was West Berliners who decided that the ruin should be a memorial. For over 44 years the church stood in freedom's sector — for nearly three decades on the western side of the Wall erected to prevent East Berliners from escaping their Communist rulers. Late in 1989 the Berlin Wall ceased to be an effective barrier between the West and East Germanies. Within two years, and the reunification of what remained of Germany, the Wall had been torn down.
We were at the Wall on one of its last and most memorable days. Moments from that glorious day — presaging the liberation of the East German people — are the subject of my Berlin 'Travelogue.' |
