Udaipur, the 'Venice of India,' isn't anything of the sort. It is, however, a pleasant and interesting city, one that most westerners would deem more liveable than most Indian towns. It's cleaner than most; has good restaurants; has interesting modern and historical sites and sights; and has a somewhat more bearable climate than most of Rajastan (or India generally).
Both VT and Lonely Planet put the great Jain center of Ranakpur as a sub-set of Udaipur. Since Ranakpur is about 2.5 hours away by road, it really ought to be a separate entry.
