Favorite Thing: My idea of Roman ruins was mostly of structures in varying states of decay. Certainly that rings true for lots of areas like the Forum and Colloseum. But the Pantheon is very different. The inside is breathtakingly beautiful. Many different colors and types of marble cover the walls and floors, along with wonderful statues and paintings. It's very similar to St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Just glorious.

Favorite Thing: There's a nice walk between the Trastavere neighborhood and the Vatican called the Passeggiata del Gianicolo (or something like that). If you can manage to not get lost finding the beginning of the damn thing, as we did, you'll find it a lovely walk. It offers numerous views of the city and surrounding hillsides. I saw a few churchgoing types enjoying the view. I like this shot.

Favorite Thing: The Ponte Sante Angelo was one of the more attractive sights I saw along the Tiber River in Rome. It connects the Castel Sant'Angelo to the city center. For a good view, cross the Vittorio Emanuele bridge which comes straight out of the Vatican.

Favorite Thing: Along certain patches it's possible to walk the river banks of the Tiber river. This historic river no doubt proved invaluable in building this hub of the Roman Empire.

icunme Thu Mar 23, 2006 21:07 UTC About the best photo I've ever seen of Piaza Venezia. Will return oftne. Ciao, Carol | CALSF Sun Nov 21, 2004 23:25 UTC I love Rome-second to Paris for me. I understand your feeling of being a bit letdown with Rome. You're right it has to do with high expectations. Rome is a compact, traffic-filled city but look past those things and its beauty emerges. |
