Bistro Romain: Nice Place for Dinner

Restaurant Name: Bistro Romain
We went to the Bostro Romain on Champ Elysees and we enjoyed our dinner, plus we had a great place right in a busy area of the Champs. It was about the usual price for these chains for a set menu dinner, maybe a bit more expensive (I would say average price for Paris, which means a bit too expensive, but it's Paris). I was thouroughly expecting the food to be terrible since it's in such a great location, but I discovered that it was really good (to say delicious would be possibly going to far, but enjoyable). We had a great time sitting there and would definitely go back. Later we saw ads forthe restaurant all over the metro stations and realized that it is a chain with many locations in Paris, including the Opera area (2 rue de la Chaussée d'Antin).

Restaurant Name: Indiana Cafe
The place is not vegetarian, but you can order a bean burrito here that is huge and quite good. Recommended for the vegetarian who can't find anything to eat in Paris and for anyone who likes Mexican food.

Hippo: Yum and they are all over Paris

Restaurant Name: Hippo
Mostly hamburgers, steaks, stuff like that, you get to choose two side dishes (or maybe one, memory is fuzzy), and then you can order seconds and thirds of the side dish for free if you want, so if you are with someone, each should order a different side and then when you finish you can ask for more. They have an ice cream with strawberries on top that is divine. I like this place, the prices are good and you get a good meal and no surprises, the service was very friendly and helpful, even though I am American :-) Update from last time I was there: The last time I was there, the service was not as nice and the restaurant was really hot, as the sun stays out late in the summer. All I can do is to suggest going in the spring/fall/winter or later at night when the sun won't be coming through the window. I also think that it got more expensive. Inflation in Europe, all of the chain restaurants seem more expensive than I remembered.
Favorite Dish: They have a veggie burger which is ok, not great and not bad, but that was the only vegetarian thing on the menu. I came back a few times, so I have no complaints

General: Vegetarian Beware

Restaurant Name: General
Just a warning for vegetarians or people trying to keep kosher: Paris is not vegetarian-friendly, it is a big pain finding something vegetarian to eat, unless you want to take a special trip every night to one of the vegetarian restaurants. In a regular restaurant you often have no choice except a salad., which is never enough for me. I would suggest pizza places, HIppo's veggie burger, the Tex-Max place I recommended, and a lot of cheese sandwiches for lunch. At one point I also was staying with a friend and thought i would go grocery shopping and find some veggie stuff to eat: Also extremely difficult. I looked for cheese ravioli or cheese tortellili: they only had ham and cheese. I looked for macaroni and cheese, it also only comes with ham in it. This country puts ham in everything, a kosher person's nightmare.

Restaurant Name: Pizza Hut
It is silly to recommend Pizza Hut, but there is a really good one on the same street by the Opera as the other restaurants that I recommended. It is a bit after the Hippo, on the same side of the street. Try the local way: put some of the semi-spicy oil that is sitting on your table on top of your pizza and enjoy.
