HARMAN / HONIGBERG

by josephescu - last update: Aug 2, 2006

At the outskirts of Brasov, around 8 km far, road to Sf. Gheorghe.

some historic facts

It is believed Saxon settlers arrived in the area between 1213 – 1235.

Being very close to Prejmer and to Brasov, it is reasonable to assume all shared common events - same invadors, same plaques and natural catastrophies.

However, the inhabitants of Harman were not so lucky as the ones of Prejmer or Rasnov, whose fortresses were conquered only once throughout history.

The locality was first mentioned in a document in 21st of march 1240, according to which the Hungarian King Bela the IV donates the church of Harman (aka Mons Mellis), with all its belongings and incomes, to the Burgundian monastery from Citeaux, belonging to the Cistercian order.

1552 – the fortress besieged without success by the Moldavian ruler Stefan Tomsa

1593 and 1600 – fires destroy different parts of the village

1602 –the Valachian ruler Radu Voda occupies the fortress, fortess partly destroyed

1603 – the imperial army of G. Basta conquers the village and fortress

1612 – unsuccessful besiege of Gabriel Bathory
