| | Where? In the north eastern part of the former soviet republic of Moldova, near the border witrh Ukraine, where Nistru (Dniester) river begins its descent, lays a charming forgotten town. Soroca is surrounded by a mountain with deep ravines, sheer rocks and luscious green foliage, so that the town evokes the image of a wide amphitheatre with slopes down into a picturesque landscape overlooking the Dniester river. |
| | Why? The land on which Soroca lies today was home to the Greek colony of Olhionia. But the first documented records about Soroca date back to 1499, during the rule of Stephan the Great, who built the first fortress on the spot to strengthen the eastern frontiers.
Reported as the “gypsy capital of Moldova” as per LP, we came across a tranquil small town, with no gypsies on sight (though we would’ve enjoyed their picturesque presence) and with a lots of weddings taking place all along the weekend. |
