Why Travel?

Growing up as a military brat, I had opportunities to travel which many folks don't have. I lived various places in the Western US as a small child (Oregon, California, Wyoming) eventually settling in Bend, Oregon until second grade. The summer following second grade would prove to be the most life altering period of my entire life. Unhappy with our position in life, my mother left everything familiar and bravely struck out with my sister and I and joined DODDS (a governmental teaching system). We were "stationed" in Misawa, Japan the subsequent fall, and I began what would prove to be ten continuous years of living in Japan. My family and I lived in Misawa, Japan (northern Honshu, near Aomori) for five years and then transferred to Okinawa, Japan (a small island near the Tropic of Cancer) for the next 5 years. This experience planted a seed of exploration which will continue throughout my life.
