The first time I went to Vietnam, I skipped Hoi An. There were two real reasons. One was weather related, it was flooding season; and, I also had read enough that I thought I'd hate being herded into a little precious touristy city.
Well, on a repeat trip to Vietnam, I just thought that I sort of HAD to visit. The weather at that point wasn't an excuse (although it was hot, as it was my entire trip in SE Aisa), and I was heading south from Hanoi anyway to fly home out of HCMC...so, Hoi An was on the itinerary.
I definitely didn't regret going (I don't think I've ever regretted being anywhere), but it's not a place I just can't wait to retun to.
As with much of Vietnam, but especially in the south, the market economy has taken full hold.
Here, women are shopping, but, they are Vietnamese women doing their daily shopping in the market, and, it's doubtful that they've been taken by the arm and asked to please, please, please look at my shop, madam!
Despite the tourist enclave feel of Hoi An, there are real, live Vietnamese people here who aren't exactly trying to sell you things. They are just trying to get home from school...and, quite possibly avoid the tourists' cameras, like mine!
- Pros:picturesque, great local food
- Cons:very touristy, aggressive salespeople
- In a nutshell:worth a short stay at least

I am back in Ethiopia in 3 weeks, may be moving there for a year.
I loved this town, but yes: "sir sir madam madam visit my shop" is an usual music here and in asia in general.
Yep - she found us. She offered me some peanut brittle to try and I declined. She said it was a New Year custom to give peanut brittle (bulldust). We did buy a round of it at a little shop for 15000dong. Our friend the vendor was asking 40 000...
