Miss Saigon: Delicious Vietnamese in Rice Village!

This a great vietnamese restaurant located at the heart of the Rice Village district. It is cheap for extremely delicate, spiceful dishes. This restaurant is small and family run. Nice atmosphere. Lots of locals go there. Do not miss it!!

Favorite Dish: Everything is good! My favorite is the Flambé cubes, delicious beef cubes.

Hugo's delicious Mexican fancy food, Houston - Houston

Hugo's delicious Mexican fancy food, Houston

Hugo's: Fancy Mexican on Westheimer

This wonderful restaurant offers haute-cuisine type of Mexican food, it is delicious and unlike any other Mexican restaurant you have been too. Everything is delicious! They have a large menu of meats and fishes. I enjoyed the goat dish (yes!) and the rabbit one. And the margaritas are probably the best in town. Try the original smokey Oaxaca one. Very professional waiters and the presentation of the food is also lovely (see picture).
Make a reservation for a Friday and Saturday night. It gets crowded!
They have valet parking at the back of the restaurant but you can park for free in the nearby streets.

Favorite Dish: Everything is good. Be adventurous and try the grass hoppers? Don't worry, they also have chicken and snapper...

The Cheesecake Factory, Galleria Mall: Huge portions of American food! Cheesecake Factory Review

The Cheesecake factory is very commercial but still fun to go to. Half the pages of the menu are for advertizement! It is a chain that you find in most US cities. Their dishes are really good, and their desserts (yes, cheesecakes mainly, how did you guess??) are to die for. The protion are huge. I suggest you eat only half of your main dish, have it "doggy" packed, and thereby saving room for the dessert! I also enjoy their fun various cocktails. The atmosphere is entertaining because the type of people are very mixed, basically the shoppers of the Galleria. The waiters and waitresses are generally good and helpful. There is always a line but it goes through fast. It is a factory after all, it processes its customers efficiently!

Favorite Dish: The cajun dishes are my favorite.

Address: 5015 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77056

Directions: Located in the Galleria Mall
There is now a cheesecake factory in the Clear Lake area at the Baybrook mall (Bay area blvd exit of I45).

The Hilton hotel on U of Houston main campus - Houston

The Hilton hotel on U of Houston main campus

Eric's: University of Houston Hilton excellent restaurant

The University of Houston main campus has a School of hotel and restaurant management & service. This is their restaurant. All the food and service is by the students. Excellent service and dishes. Sort of average choice of fish and meats American style, but everything was perfect! Atmosphere is a little what you expect from a hotel restaurant, a little boring and empty. But there are not many good restaurants around the University of Houston main campus, and Eric's is one of the best.

Favorite Dish: I had the most delicious tuna, cooked to perfection.

Address: 4800 Calhoun Rd, Houston, TX 77004

Rouge: Excellent French/American, all in red! (Montrose)

****Update 2013: this restaurant unfortunately is now closed!!****

Rouge is a recently opened restaurant in the Montrose area. As its name indicates, the decor is all in red (bordeaux). The service and food are excellent for the price. The presentations of the dishes are very original and nice, and the portions sizes very reasonable (not too big like in most American restaurants!). Can be a very romantic restaurant especially in the small room upstairs. The food is a cross between French (with a tinge of North African) and American. They change the menu regularly and experiment. Count $150 for 2 persons with wine.

Favorite Dish: We loved the lamb and the rabbit dishes!

Address: 812 Westheimer, Houston TX 77006

Moules et frites in Houston, Jeanine's Bistro - Houston

Moules et frites in Houston, Jeanine's Bistro

Jeanine Bistro: Lovely Belgian restaurant: best mussels & fries!

Although this restaurant has been in Houston for decades, I only went recently and absolutely loved it! You do not know what Belgian food is? Wonderful mussels and fries, excellent creamy chicken dishes, nice steaks and stews, good fish and of course excellent fries served with mayonnaise! Note for Americans: what you call "French fries" is originally a typical Belgian specialty! They of course have a large choice of Belgian beers but also a good wine list. The waiter was very effective, professional and had lots of humor.
They are closed on Sunday.

Favorite Dish: Moules et Frites! (that's mussels and fries). I had the Congolese spicy version and it was delicious. I recommend the croquettes for appetizers (yummy fried potato puree bits). We had a nice German riesling with that.
And the desserts! Try the crêpes (see picture)!

Sunset at Sundance Grill in Clear Lake Texas USA - Houston

Sunset at Sundance Grill in Clear Lake Texas USA

Sundance Grill: Sunset and sailboats in Clear Lake

***UPDATE***
Unfortunately, this restaurant got wiped-out by hurricane Ike in 2008. As of July 2010, it still has not re-opened. They have another location on the Kemah boardwalk, but I have never tried it.
***UPDATE***

This restaurant is wonderful from November to April when you can sit on their beautiful terrace and watch the boats come by and the sunset. The restaurant is located on the Southern shore of Clear Lake along the channel that the sailboats (and all sorts of pleasure boats) have to take to go back and from Clear Lake to Galveston Bay. The food is not extraordinary (typical American fare, fish, steaks, burgers), and definitely overpriced. But you pay for the view and the atmosphere. Also part of the show are the numerous birds, including some very friendly ducks who come next to your table to beg for food. We like to go to this restaurant when we have visitors or tourists from out of town. Definitely go there for diner to watch the sunset. Finally if you come by boat, they have docking facilities.

Address: 425 Highway 146, Seabrook, TX 77565

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Next to the big bridge of highway 146 over the channel. Get off 146 on the N side of the bridge. Once below the bridge, turn right at the stop (towards the W, on Shipyard Dr) towards the Marina (away from Todville Rd) until you see the restaurant.

Flamenco at Mi Luna, Houston, Texas - Houston

Flamenco at Mi Luna, Houston, Texas

Mi Luna: Nice spanish tapas in Rice Village Mi Luna Review

Mi Luna is a fun tapas restaurant. For those who may not know, tapas are spanish appetizers, i.e. small portions of food, cold or warm, typical of what is served in bars in Spain. You can get various forms of calamari, fried goat cheese, eggplant with spices, lamb dishes,... This restaurant's tapas are excellent, the waiters are very nice, the service good, the atmosphere great. Accompany that with a glass of nice spanish wine.
Some evenings feature a flamenco entertainment after 8 pm.

The Davenport Lounge: The best martinis in Clear Lake & Houston!

This cocktail lounge has an impressive list of about 50 different martinis, plus many other cocktails. They also have a solid collection of Scotches and vodkas. The martinis are delicious, the best I have ever had! The perfect place to relax after work or on a Friday or Saturday night.

Open every day from 2 pm to 2 am.

There are 2 Davenport lounges, one in the center of Houston (2117 Richmond Ave), and one in the Clear Lake Area (1235 Clear Lake City Blvd). I only went to the latter which opened a year ago (I am writing this tip in Sept 2010).

Favorite Dish: The caramel apple martini

Inside Opus restaurant, Clear Lake Shores, Texas - Houston

Inside Opus restaurant, Clear Lake Shores, Texas

Opus Bistro: Fancy dining overlooking sailboats Clear Lake Area

Lovely restaurant serving American/Italian fare, wide range of fish and meat dishes, with a good wine menu. The waiters are extremely nice and helpful. They really care about making your dining experience enjoyable and are not your average high school or college kid making a buck, they are either the owners or professionals. I particularly love the view from the dining room (or from the terrace) because it overlooks a small marina. Some people come in by boat! Most Houston restaurants overlook an ugly parking lot, not this one! Perfect restaurant for a romantic evening. The terrace must be great during the cooler months (October to April). On the Saturday night we went, most of the crowd was in their 50' or older, but there were a few younger couples. Only downside: a touch noisy because of the reflecting walls, maybe adding some drapes or carpet would help.
Reservations recommended.

Favorite Dish: Appetizers: I loved my crab salad that had mangoes, tomatoes, and basil, and was fresh and delicious. My husband loved the crab cakes.
Main dish: My veal New Orleans was delicious, and my husband enjoyed his steak very much.
Wine: I recommend the Goldschmidt California Cabernet Sauvignon.

Address: 1002 Aspen Road, Clear Lake Shores, TX 77565

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Near Kemah, South of Houston.
Main entrance of the Clear Lake Shore Island.
