Hotel of Yunnan Geological & Mining Ressources: The Hotel for Geologists in Kunming

This is not likely a hotel where you will end up, unless you have some business with the Yunnan Bureau of Geological & Mining Ressources... This 4 star hotel is where our meeting was held for a few days. It was very comfortable, the staff very friendly and overall a great experience.

It is in the Eastern suburbs, far from downtown, and therefore inconvenient for touring downtown Kunming. It is nearby a cute little Lake and dam (Baishahe I think) with a charming park associated with it.

Unique Qualities: I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by our Chinese colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Address: On Baishahe Lake, E suburb of Kunming, Yunnan

Directions: Who knows? Bumpy and dusty roads lined with shacks from downtown... Supposedly, there is a direct highway but it was on construction and therefore impassable!

Shenghui Hotel: Original Pleasant Hotel in Dali

This 4 star hotel was fun for me because it was not your typical bland modern tourist hotel. A real effort was made in the decoration and layout of the buildings, inspired by the local architecture. Pointy decorated chinese roofs, pleasant courtyards add to the great experience of very modern and comfortable rooms, just like I describe in the tip above.

Moreover, this hotel is located within walking distance of old town Dali (5 mn).

Unique Qualities: Traditional-like architecture.

Mojiang Jijin Hotel: Supposedly the best Hotel in Mojiang... burk!

We were told this was the best hotel in Mojiang, which is not a touristy town. Luckily, we only stayed one night in this ugly modern building (Mojiang is entirely made of ugly modern buildings). First it was very noisy, your authentic Chinese cheap hotel night, karaoke screams, phone calls in the middle of the night, pounding on the door included. I did not sleep well also because it was so hot; opening the window meant being deafened by the karaoke in the bar below, closing the window meant dying in the heat as the "air conditioning" unit did not work. Besides, the bathroom was dirty and we skipped showering that day.

Directions: I do not know the address as the pamphlet I got is all in Chinese... It was definitely on a main avenue of downtown Mojiang.

Yunlong Hotel: Comfortable Tourist Hotel in Lijiang

This 3 star hotel is your classical tourist big modern hotel, nothing quaint about it, but it is comfortable. You do not get bothered by karaoke noises, and that is a definite plus. A friend of mine who was sick and stayed a day in our room said that when they cleaned the rooms they left the doors of all the rooms open for hours on end. Although nothing was reported to have been stolen, I would still not leave any valuable in my room.

It is located in the modern part of town on a big ugly boulevard which main quality is the amazing perspective on the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towards the North. It takes about 1/2 hour to walk to the old part of Lijiang. But taxis are cheap and will take you down there in 5 mn.

Typical 4-star hotel room

A typical 4-star hotel room in Yunnan is top quality, as good as you would get at a Best Western or even the Marriot in the US. As you can see in the picture, we had pristine clean beds, large rooms, large clean bathrooms with all the comfort a Westerner is used to. The TV even had one channel in English (mainly about business and economics in East Asia). Just remember to insert your card key in the appointed slot near the door so that you can operate the lights and other electrical appliances. And do not forget to brush your teeth with bottled water as, 4 star or not, no tap water is safe in China. Clean safe water is anyway provided in each of these rooms from a water dispenser.
