Off The Beaten Path: Lynx in the Pienniny
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lynx prefer to live in Northern Europe.
There are only 25 lynx left in the Pienniny mountains of Poland, 1,000 left in Romania, and 7,000 left in Europe.

These animals are hunted for their fur- which is unfortunately highly priced on the black market and are becoming ever rarer-not just in Poland, but in all of Europe.

  • Watch out for brown bears! Just 3 years ago the Polina Pod Wolszynem had to be closed for the summer becuase a tourist said that he had seen a female brown bear with her cubs.
There are just 12 brown bears left in the Tatry mountains,5,500 left in europe, but only 8-10 remaing in France.

    Off The Beaten Path: Chamios
  • Tip Rating:
  • The national symbol of Tatranski National Park, the one place these rare mammals live in Poland are in the Mountains. There are circa. 160 Chamios living in the Tatry.
The best place to see Chamois in the Polish Tatry are in the many Jaskin(caves) which are situated on the southwest side of the Polish part of the Tatry.

Off The Beaten Path: "The Stone Witch" (Czarownica)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many people miss the "Stone Witch" located at Ciezkowicach(the stoney city), which is located south of Tarnow and north of Nowy Sacz. It is called the Stone Witch because it is a cliff that has been eroded away into what now really looks like a witch's head!. It clearly shows the witch's nose and face ( though the eyes have'nt been eroded yet:)The city is called the stoney city becuase of it's many cliffs and boulders.
Make sure to visit the national park that is situated to the southeast.

Off The Beaten Path: climbing Mt.Giewont (1895m)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't forget to climb Mt.Giewont. When you get to the summit, you will have a breaktaking view of the Tatry Mountains and will be able to actually touch the gigantic cross that is errected on the top of the Mountain(as seen on the picture)

Off The Beaten Path: Space Observatory, Kasprowy Weirch (1985m)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Poland - Kasprowy Weirch(1,985m)
  • Kasprowy Weirch(1,985m)
  • by mr.jacob

  • Try to get up to the summit of Kasprowy Weirch by cable car(from Kuznice) if you want to see a real space observatory-the highest in Poland.

They used this spot for the space observatory because there is hardly any pollution up on the mountain and most clouds float under the summit, which is great for star-gazing!

Not to mention some awe inspiring views of the Tatry Mountains!!- some of the best known mountains that are visible from the peak of Kasprowy are Swinica(2,301m), Krywan(2,494m-tallest peak situated entirely in Slovakia) and Bystra(2,248m).

From this point you can also walk eastwards onto Beskid(2,012m)-which is no more then 1 km away and can be reached by avid hikers.

  • Sking in the Tatry Mountains can be challenging but it is always fun.

One of the best ski runs is on Kasprowy Weirch, in the Tatry- but it is expensive just to get up onto the 1,987m mountain.

You can take a ski-lift up to get there.

  • Trying hiking this mountain! (1,895m)

It is very dangerous so bring some pickaxs, nice hiking shoes and a lot of muscle.

This mountain should only be climbed by experienced climbers because of it's steepness towards the summit.

Many people die each year(in 2000 I think it was 8)so try not to climb this mountain if you are not an good climber.
