For centuries the marvellous Archipelago of Zanzibar has been the east african focal point for maritime trades - legal or not - more or less merciless conquests, piracies, slaves and ivory trades.
Moreover, it has been under the colonial influence of the european nations and the starting point for the exploration of oriental Africa.
After the revolution of 1964, Zanzibar was kept isolated until when, in 1986, its Government decided to open the island to foreign visitors and investments; of course, the industry of tourism was the sector that was directiy and mostly affected by this new deal.
In 1998, about 60,000 tourists visited Zanzibar and the number is steadily increasing year after year
I have organized my Zanzibar page into a general section (the present one) and three photo-travelogues (check the upper-right part of this page), respectively dedicated to some interesting local people I met during my trip, to the colorful Stone Town - Zanzibar's Capital - and to the unbelievable sea and beaches of this fascinating island.
