Culture: Israeli Folk-Dancing
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just love Israeli folk-dancing; the music is great - even just to listen to, and it helps keep you fit.
Every Saturday between 11am - 2pm - when it gets too hot, then it starts from 6pm-9pm.
I dance at the Sportek - Rokach Blvd., northern border of Tel Aviv.
There is also Saturday Israeli folk-dancing on the Tel Aviv Promenade, Ben & Jerry's, below the Renaissance Hotel. 11am - 3pm, come rain or shine!
This type of dance is very popular here and your can find somewhere to dance most nights. I dance twice during the week also!

Tel-Aviv's Weekend Market: Free Zone Tel-Aviv's Weekend Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The advert says "Like New York, London, Amsterdam, now in Tel-Aviv". Well I can't compare to these other places as I have only been to the one in Tel-Aviv. When I went there recently, I was surprised that so many people were there, as I hadn't known about it. Today though a nice flyer was put into my letterbox about this "happening". Lots of activity there for all ages. Lots of stalls with jewellery, clothes, bags (I bought a nice backpack for NIS 20 - just what I need for short outings), and, of course, lots of food to be bought. For younger kids there is a play area with inflated mattresses etc., and a place for older kids to paint. There is also a stage with DJ's. Apart from this you can learn about or have yoga, Swedish massage, shiatsu and reflexology treatments.

Ganei Yehoshua (Yarkon Park) near the lake.
    Rokach Blvd., north Tel-Aviv
    Weekends (Friday/Saturday)from 10:00-18:00
    Dan Buses: 21,27,28,47,48,113
    Dan Information: 03-6394444
Many guards and policemen on duty
Entrance: NIS 10, children under 12 free
    Till the end of May

Off The Beaten Path: A Pretty Spot and Monument
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tel Aviv-Yafo - General G. Hill Square, Tel Aviv
  • General G. Hill Square, Tel Aviv

  • This monument commemorates the Battle of Kikar Hill on 21st December 1927. The waterfall is on the same spot and is dedicated to the late Haviv Ben-Shaanan, who grew up here. It was dedicated by his mother Sarah. On the other side is a tomb cave.
This area was settled from the 4th millenium onward by different ancient peoples, their remains, including Israelite settlement and monarchy periods have been brought to light in excavations conducted by the Museum of Antiquities of Tel-Aviv-Yafo Museum Haaretz. The tomb cave dates to the Judian period.

This site is adjacent to Shimon Hatarsi and Horkonus Streets - north Tel-Aviv, not far from the bridge crossing the Yakon at the end of Ibn Gvirol Street.
This place is frequented very regularly, every day - by cats!! Cat lovers look after the cats roaming around the area and have taken it upon themselves to feed them and have them spayed.
It is a pretty spot and next to it is a small park with a playground. I wonder if even the neighbours know the history of this spot.

Off The Beaten Path: Sculpture on the Streets of Tel Aviv
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tel Aviv-Yafo - Mordechai Schornstein
  • Mordechai Schornstein
  • by Jackiekg

  • Tel Aviv has many fine sculptures outdoors. At one time there was a law that buildings over a certain size had to include artwork to a value of 1% of the building's cost. This is why many high rise buildings have sculptures in their forecourt. That law does not exist today. Also Meshulem Riklis donated $250,000 in 1989 to beautify Tel Aviv. 15 sculpters were chosen and each given $15,000 to make a sculpture, which were then put in different locations in the city.
The sculpture here is of Mordechai Schornstein by Kaele Ephraim Marcus. It was created in 1945. Schornstein had a zoo here until the 1970's (in fact I used to bring my kids here), and when it grew too large for this spot the animals were moved to Ramat Gan.
This statue is just outside the park of Gan Ha'ir, on Hadassa Street. The main entrance of Gan Ha'ir - a good class shopping centre is on Ibn Gvirol Street, next to the Tel Aviv municipality.
