  • This colorful and lively square is the core of Old Prague in the Stare Mesto quarter. It became the heart of the city when the Town Hall was built here in the 13th century.

This is the main spot for touristsso its full of restaurants, cafes and too many souvenir shops. The Jan Hus Memorial, the Tyn Churck and the Town Hall with its Astronomical Clock are the main sights here.

  • Jan Hus (1369-1415) was the most important Czech reformer who was excommulgated and burned. The memorial was built in 1915 and Hus is surrounded by the victorious Hussite patriots and Protestants defeated by the Hapsburgs.

The monument is very beautiful and marks the center of Old Town Square.

Old-Town Hall & Astronomical Clock: The marvelous Astronomical Clock

  • Follow the crowds and you'll find the Astronomical Clock. On the hour, all faces will be looking how it works which is rather complex, by the way. First, Death pulls a cord which rings a bell, then the 12 Apostoles show up in two tiny windows and the hour is rung. All this mixed with revolving disks, celestial objects and zodiac symbols.

The clock marks the Bohemian time in Gothic numbers and the modern time in Roman numerals.

This is a must see but watch out for pickpocketers.

  • To the left of the Clock there is Tourist Information center and the access to the Tower. For 40 Kc you take an elevator to the top of the tower which provides excellent views of the square, the city and even the palace. I really enjoyed it.

Church of Our Lady before Tyn: Tyn Church, pretty but....

  • The Tyn Church faces the Old Town Square and was the leading Hussite church for 2 centuries after Hus' death.

Unfortunately, new buildings and souvenir stores have been installed at its foot so the entrance to the church is hidden, dirty and completely spoiled by vendors. A shame.

  • Despite the heavy crowds, you'll enjoy every second you spend on this gorgeous bridge. It was built by Charles IV in 1357 and was the only in Prague until 1850.

The bridge has statues on both sides (many are replicas), each one with its own history and meaning. The two most important are te Crucifix and John of Nepokum, a saint of the Czech people.

The bridge connects Stare Mesto (old town) with Mala Strana over the Vltava river.

  • The bridge has 2 towers, one at each end. The Bridge Tower, on the Stare Mesto side, is one of the finest Gothic gates in the world.

  • The history tells that the queen confesed her sins to this priest so the king tried to force him to tell him about them. He refused so he was tortured and killed tossing him from the bridge. It is said that 5 stars appeared when he hit the water (they are surrounding his head as a crown).

People make lines to touch the base of the statue as the legend says that your wish will come true but you only have one chance in your life.
