London, still the largest city in Europe and once the capital of the greatest empire the world has ever known, was one of my most desired destinations for years. (I had visited London once during my honeymoon but I got sick thanks to contaminated hamburger ... but that's another story)
Not only we are taught British English since our early school days but, as european descendents, we are very influenced by their culture. Then I was eager to arrive in London to enjoy its overabundance of history, monuments and artistic manifestations including rock and alternative music since the best bands are British. From the Rolling Stones to Madness and Depeche Mode, this is my music Mecca.
Even though Britain is no longer the Empire it used to be, many of its symbols and institutions which played such an important role in shaping that world remain strong, intact and vastly cherished. So it is quite interesting to wander from the classy Buckingham Palace to Camden Market and its pintoresque fauna within minutes.
The River Thames meanders through central London, dividing it into northern and southern areas. Most of the important sights, theatres and restaurants are on the north bank of the river. The trendy West End includes Soho, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Regent St.
Samuel Johnson said "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life". Then he bought an umbrella. |
