  • Restaurant Name: El Jamonal

El Jamonal is located on a small square (named El Callao, I think) and most tables are outside right by the street. Don't go is the weather if not nice. The place is not fancy at all and it just meets the needs of the hungry visitor looking for tasty affordable food. Service is just fair. Recommended if you're on a budget.

Favorite Dish: Grilled chicken, roasted pork and asparagus omellete.

Right across Plaza Mayor there is a short 2 block street named Los Coloreros which is full of restaurants, bars and chocolaterias. It is a very nice and charming area to dine out or go for a drink.

Chocolateria San Gines is at the end of the street and serves hot chocolate and churros (sticks of fried dough). It is a very popular spot that is usually crowded even at 2 am in the morning.

This is a nice restaurant with good italian food and excellent pizzas. Prices are very affordable. You won't see this restaurant listed in a fashion magazine but if you look for tasty food, low prices, a neat place and good service, give it a try.

Favorite Dish: Mozzarella pizza with mushrooms

  • Restaurant Name: La burbuja que rie

La Burbuja que Rie is a small busy restaurant and sidreria (cider is the house's most popular drink). The place caters to young people and is known for its good food, large portions and excellent prices.

The decoration is cousy with wood and old barrels. The place is usually crowded so you'd better arrive early.

They have a menu for only 6 euros.

Favorite Dish: Try their pork meals like chorizo a la sidra

Alimentacion stores and lunch menus: Tips to eat cheap in Madrid

  • Restaurant Name: Alimentacion stores and lunch menus

As the euro goes up, we need to find options to keep travelling costs low. So, unfortunately, eating at restaurants in Europe is becoming a luxury for a few.

Then I recommend buying your food at "Alimentacion" stores and prepare your own sandwiches for the road. Good jamon serrano, cheese, home made bread and a cold coke... who needs more than that!!! You can eat for less than 3 euros this way.

If you still like hot food and been served, then consider that all restaurants in Madrid have a fixed menu at lunch for 7-9 euros including 2 courses and dessert. That's why some experienced travellers recommend to take a full lunch and make savings at night when eating at the same places is much more expensive.

a great tour of Madrid, Sebastian! You're right about the Colon Towers - they blend better in HongKong. El Viejo - Manny

Aaah, the beauty of such a latenight moonrise in summertime...I've had the pleasure of experiencing Madrid in a scorching June and a chilly (!!) Oct, and it's all good. Your night shot of Puerta del Sol looks very Argentine as well...;-)

Completely agree with the tip about Madrid’s visitors card, though I could not say the same about Madrid Vision tours: they are only useful to get a "moreno de camionero", as we say here ;-) A very good review of Madrid!
