As you may know, Argentina was a Spanish colony until we claimed our independence in 1816. Later, during the early 20th century, we received a large European inmigration flow, mainly from Spain and Italy. Last year, when I visited Italy, I began to understand who we, Argentines, are. Now, while visiting Madrid, I met the other half of the tale (certainly the stronger one) that depicts how our country and our culture was born. It was amazing and touching to find so many similarities between Madrid and Buenos Aires; restaurants and its food, people and their customs, clothes, words, sense of humour, smells.... Having Spanish grandparents, this was, in a sense, a trip back to my roots.
In general terms I saw Spain radiant, wealthy and booming. It looks like finally they have matched other neighboring economies after playing a catch up role in Europe since the 17th century.
Madrid looked gorgeus and neat with its streets, parks, buildings and monuments in pristine condition. New construction and renovation progresses everywhere. Its people, the Madrileños, look relaxed and enjoying life, taking the time to have a drink and eat tapas with friends. Bars and restaurants are full everywhere showing that economic conditions are favorable.
Madrid may not have all the cultural and historic sights that Rome or London offer but it has a special flavour that makes this a unique destination. The best food in the world, flamenco music and bullrings are part of the secret.
Due to its location in the middle of the Iberic peninsula, Madrid is a very dry city. Winters are mild, with temperatures around 50° F/10° C during the day, but dropping below 0°C at night. Summers are hot, with highs sometimes reaching 104° F/40° C, however it's so dry that the heat is tolerable. Rain is scarce and most likely during spring and fall. I visited during early June which was perfect. Long days, not too hot and pleasant nights. |

You're right about the Colon Towers - they blend better in HongKong. El Viejo - Manny | morgane1692 Fri Jul 9, 2004 14:42 UTC Aaah, the beauty of such a latenight moonrise in summertime...I've had the pleasure of experiencing Madrid in a scorching June and a chilly (!!) Oct, and it's all good. Your night shot of Puerta del Sol looks very Argentine as well...;-) | agarcia Mon Jul 5, 2004 13:27 UTC Completely agree with the tip about Madrid’s visitors card, though I could not say the same about Madrid Vision tours: they are only useful to get a "moreno de camionero", as we say here ;-) A very good review of Madrid! |
