Art & Museums: Week of Culture - museums for free

Favorite Thing: I had the big luck of visiting Rome during the Week of Culture (May 5th to May 12th) in which all museums and monuments in Italy have free entrance. Not only this means huge savings but you can also visit many secondary places that normally would be left aside because they may not worth the money for just a quick visit. I was afraid to face long lines but it didn't happen at all. If you plan a visit next year try to catch this week which also overlapped with the Rome Tennis Open.

Favorite Thing: During the warm season you will be thirsty all day as you walk Rome. And soft drinks may be incredibly expensive depending on where you get them. So here is the tip: avoid street refreshment carts which charge up to E 3.00 for a small Coke bottle. Find a supermercati o alimenti store. You can buy cold Coke cans there at E 0.50 and E 0.80 respectively. Same with sandwiches for your lunch. There is a supermercati in the tunnel that connects Piazza di Spagna with Via Veneto. We used to get our groceries and refreshments there. Another great point is right on Fontana di Trevi. It's called L'Antico Forno on Via delle Murate 8. Soft drinks cost E 0.80 there and just outside are sold for E 2.50!!

Favorite Thing: Al around Rome there are plenty of water outlets running all day. Is the water potable? Yes. And it is cold. So, if you're on a budget travel, carry your own bottle and refill it as many times as you wish. During the summer months you'll need to drink a lot ....

Favorite Thing: As descendants from Italians we do have excellent prosciutto (jamon crudo) and mozzarella cheese in Argentina... but my trip to Rome was a nice chance to try the real stuff. So I took care of getting my daily jumbo sandwich - made up of home bread, prosciutto di Parma and fresh mozzarella - loaded in my backpack for lunch. After returning to the hotel, more mozzarella and appetizers before dinner.

Favorite Thing: During warm days you can go broke by becoming addicted to italian gelattos. They are incredible!!! Try the Frutto di Bosque and Yoghurt ... The best place we found is on the right hand at the entrance of Campo de Fiore coming down from Piazza Navona.

Favorite Thing: Buy the Hola Latina Sud America card which is the best one to phone to this region. With only 5 Euros we had 30' of communication to Argentina. Look for it at any Tabacceria store.

Art & Museums: Tunnel from Piazza di Spagna to Via Veneto
|

Favorite Thing: There is a pedestrian tunnel which runs about 8 blocks underneath the city from the top of Via Veneto (in front of Villa Borghese) all the way down to Piazza di Spagna at entrance to the metro station. We used this tunnel many many times to go back to the Via Veneto/Villa Borghese area. There is a convenient supermarket along the way to replentish your refrigerator. It is open until 11 pm.
