  • The Piazza San Marco and the Basilica di San Marco is undoubtedly the most popular tourist sight in Venice. The Piazza assumed its present form in the Renaissance. It is also one of the lowest points in the city and frequently flooded.

Beware of the plaza's pigeons delight in dive-bombing distracted tourists on the ground!

  • The wait to visit the Basilica di San Marco was only about 15 minutes. The basilica is wonderful and mixes the Byzantine touch of its bulbous domes with the styles of more clasical Romanesque and Renaissance periods. While in line watch the mosaics over the church's five front doors. Inside, those decorated with gold that cover the vaults and cupolas of the basilica. Then find hundreds of columns with sculptures, the marble floor, Gothic archesand the famous jewel-filled Pala d'Oro behind the altar. The Treasury contains items stolen from Constantinople in 1204.

  • Visit the Campanile and take the elevator to the top for great views of the city specially if you are a photographer. It provides a nice view at the multi-domed basilica roof.

    Bridges: Ponte del Rialto

  • Ponte di Rialto is the second most popular sight after San Marco. It is a very busy tourist area where you can browse the shops and enjoy canal views in both directions.

The famous bridge was built between 1588 and 1591as a replacement for the wooden bridges that crossed the Grand Canal since the 12th Century. Only in 1854 the Accademia Bridge added an alternative to reach the other shore.

The Rialto Bridge presents three walkways with two shops lines in the central one.

  • The Canal Grande is the main waterway that runs amidst the main islands of Venezia. This is the place where you can see the most beautiful palazzos on both sides. The best way to do that is by taking vaporetto #1 which stops at every station along the canal.

  • Glass blowing in Murano

  • Most of the glass workshops were moved to the island of Murano in 1291, to reduce the risk of fire in the city itself. A visit to the island today offers the chance to see master glassblowers at work as well as to browse store after store of glass items. The trip by water bus at Murano takes 10' from Fondamente Nuove or 45' from the San Zaccaria stop near St. Mark's Square.

If you are interested in buying Murano glass, then the island is the best place to do so.

Give it a try if you have some free time. You'll enjoy the trip itself if the weather is nice.

Nice page - it really is amazing how often Piazza San Marco is flooded. It was interesting to experience high water one night, but hard to imagine living with it on a daily basis!
