Escape the winter

by claus9000 - last update: May 3, 2003

Tenerife? Holidays on Tenerife, such a crowded place? At first I was worried very much before booking the trip to this Carian Island. But it was one of those last minute trips, and I was in search of reliable sunshine in January.
As the offer at the travel agency was good and the hotel was located in the warm and sunny South of the island - as the girl at the travel agency said - I agreed.
The first impression of the island was positive when landing at Tenerife South Airport. Even it was in the middle of January, it was around 25 degrees there. The right temperature for holidays.

Choose the right side

Tenerife's tourist centers are located on the North and the South center of the island. The Northern area, Puerto de la Cruz and surroundings, already a popular destination for centuries are much cooler and have more rain, but they also have more green vegetation. In winter, the average age of tourists there is 70+, mainly people who enjoy walking on the promenades only.
The Southern area, starting at Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas up to Adeje, is relatively new and still growing. The weather is fine, during my two weeks there I did not have any rain or clouds and temperatures up to 27 degrees, but wind sometimes. The South is more fashionable, much younger but does not have to offer nice natural vegetation. Anyway, in my opinion, it's the much better choice.

Leave your hotel or apartments

In case you want to do more than just improving your suntan, rent a car and explore the island. It's really worth and rental cars are cheap. Roads are in good condition and driving is easy. A 4 lane freeway runs from the South to Santa Cruz (the island's capital) to Puerto de la Cruz and beyond.

Pros:"Pleasant climate even in winter, comfortable accommodation"
Cons:"Too many pensioners spending the winter there"
In A Nutshell:"Ideal for an escape from the European winter"
