Camp Shermean is located about 5 miles off the beaten path off Hiway 20 in Oregon About 10 miles west of Sisters you make the turn North. It is well marked but few people know to make the side trip. It sits on the gorgous Metolious River, which is full of completely native Rainbow, Brown and endagered Bull trout. This is a designated "Wild and Scienc River" (no guides or condos on the river) and a fly fishing mecca. Catch and release only. The river is a crystal clear spring fed stream, flowing amongst old growth Ponderosa Pine. It is absolutly beautiful beyond words. The river begins from springs that flow out of a side of a hill, that actually flow through lava caves from the snowmelt of the Cascade Mountains to the west. Several other streams add to the flow and the futher down the wider and wilder the river gets.
Flyfishing, hiking, biking, camping (there are numerous Forest Srvice campgrounds, and a couple full RV parks) or just soaking in the beauty are among the favorite things to do. There is a very well stocked General Store and full Fly Shop with a deli (one of the best sandwiches I've ever had!). If you don't know how to Flyfish, but have always wanted to learn, they offer an afternoon class that'll teach you more than you thought you could learn in 3-4 hours, including a full casting lesson. Don't miss this, as it is a real diamond, better than most, and very resonably priced compared to the market. The store also rents bikes, or flyfishing gear by the day, and serves as the "hub" and headquarters for information.
A real nice dinner house, and several small lodges/motels/ resorts cater to those who perfer not to camp.
The Fish Hatchey located a few miles downstream (north) is still active even though the river isn't stock any longer (thus completely native population.) But they raise fish for the nearby lakes. It's a must visit, as the brood stock there are in excess of 3 ft, and you can get right up close. Plus the River at the Hatchery bridge is beauty that will burn a welcomed picture in you mind forever.
Visit Camp Sherman, and the Metolius River. Once you do, you'll come back often
