Carriage Gates

All around the historic center of Maastricht you can see these huge doorways. Some of them are even transformed into shopping windows. But in fact they are carriage gates. In the middle ages these gates were used to let the horsedrawn carriages go to the inner courtyard of a house. Usually when you see one of these gates you can be sure that there will be a second one just behind it.

Winterland Maastricht

Every year from november to the beginning of january, there is a winter wonderland at the Vrijthof Square. It is like a miniature Christmas market cum amusement park. You can go ice skating, drink some gluhwein, shop at the X-mas shops or go on the ferris wheel, to name a few. Entrance is free.

Double Streetsigns Dialect Review

In the city center you will see double street signs. The top one, in blue, is written in Dutch and the bottom one, in white, is written in Dialect. Most cities in the province of Limburg have their own dialect. And so does Maastricht of course.
