If you're in Veracruz... ...take the time to spend at least half a day in Xico. Not only is it a neat little pueblito all in and of itself, but the nearby waterfalls (featured in the movie "Clear and Present Danger") are absolutely breathtaking.
The waterfalls are about a half an hour walk from the town, or I suppose you could take a taxi. I, however, would recommend the walk, as it is a neat stroll through coffee-growing country, with an occasional group of campesinos passing by on horses or with donkeys loaded with firewood (plus, walking is healthier and cheaper!).
Another thing to be noted about Xico is that it was used to film the immensely popular (and quite good, really) Mexican film "El Crimen de Padre Amaro." The church downtown, and several streets were filmed for that movie.
The downtown church/zocolo is definitely something to see, and from there you can stroll down Xico's main street (really the only one with any cafés or businesses) and mabye buy some local coffee while you're at it.
I highly recommend going on a week day, because I hear that on weekends there are a lot of vistors and it's a little more hectic. I went there on a Thursday and it was simply serene. |
