when beauty has time to age gracefully

Althorp House

Althorp

The house is open during summer months (July, August and September) for public visitation. Diana, Princess of Wales grew up in this large and beautiful stately home. The Diana exhibit is a dignified reminder of her humanity and of the world's loss. She died too young but will always be remembered for her beauty and compassion.

You might want to go and see this very soon as there were some rumblings in the press about this home being closed to the public after this season. I hope not. Although the residing family must suffer some inconvenience by having their home open to all and it is well run, which means the cost is palpable.

There are many fine foods in the stable block, where the courtyard has been turned into a comfortable place to have lunch.

You can find out more by calling 01604 770107, or visiting www.althorp.com. The latter I recommend - the website is full of information, including a history of the Spencer family and upcoming events.

The Temple

This is a memorial structure for Diana. In this simple alcove is a silhouette of the late Princess and a couple of quotes attributed to her. According to the Althorp brochure, the lake in the foreground is called The Round Oval and was created in 1865.
Ducks?

Are these ducks or geese?

See these birds here that live by the lake. Does anyone have a UK bird book? At first I thought they were ducks but the legs and neck look too long.

the pub recently had a complete revamp: it has brilliantly been done in an slightly modern style but keeping the 400 years old oak-ceiling. mainly modern italian kitchen. book a table in advance. http://www.diningpubs.co.uk/pub_details.asp?id=2502

I saw Diana on her wedding day, as she was on her way to her honeymoon near my home. I also saw her just before she died, when Pavarotti sang to her at the Albert Hall.
