The place that opened my eyes to the world

by city_guy - last update: Dec 23, 2003

Every kids dream place

Me and a friend at the entrance

One of my very first places I visited when I used to work in Tokyo back in 90-91. Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamed of going to Disneyland just like every kid. I finally made my way there and boy did it bring out the kid in me.
Well, if one should know, all the Disney characters speak japanese so it was rather kind of unique. Japanese people dressed in cowboy & indian attire and the works. A truly interesting culture shock if you're seeking one.
I strongly recommend those going to Tokyo to stop by the Disneyland.

Neon in Shinjuku

amazing city of neon

Only in Japan as they say, neon lights running at every corner of the street in Shinjuku.

The two main shopping streets are Shinjuku Dori Avenue and Yasukuni Dori Avenue. Don't forget too, all the little streets in between. Studio Alta, with its giant TV screen, is directly opposite My City. As a popular rendezvous point, the entrance is often so crowded that meeting the person you're supposed to be meeting is really no option at all.

Shinjuku Eastmouth is the high street shopping area. It's also where you'll find "Kabukicho", the red light district.

From inside Shinjuku Station, follow the signs to the "Central East Exit". Once out you'll see "My City". Somewhat unfortunate in appearance, the building was finished in 1964. The inside is divided into a mass of small shop units.

Strip clubs, hostess bars and pachinko parlours occupy Kabukicho. But here too, you'll also find many mainstream cinemas together with Koma Stadium, a venue for traditional music and dance (tickets available on the door). To get to Kabukicho, cross over Yasukuni Dori Avenue in the direction away from Shinjuku Station.

HOW TO GET TO SHINJUKU

Shinjuku Station is on the JR Yamanote Line, the JR Chuo Line, the JR Sobu Line, the JR Saikyo Line, the Marunouchi Subway Line, the TOEI Shinjuku Line, the TOEI no 12 Line, the Odakyu Line and the Keio Line.

An old haunt

Taken at Shibuya, I believe this is the biggest tower store in the world with 8-9 floors of music... oh man.

My favourite shopping place

Hey, great club list. Included some of my favorites. Should really try to find BLUE. Kinda like YELLOW but harder to find about 10 min walk from Harajuku station. Sorry, so drunk I was very lucky to find my way to the station at 5am.
