In my Egypt pages I wrote about the Victoria Hotel which we stayed in whilst in Cairo (please refer to this tip for more information). This affordable Hotel is an old fashioned styled Hotel that George Bernard Shaw used to frequent when he came to Cairo. Yes it may be a bit older than some of the more up market and upbeat Hotels around but the rooms are spotlessly clean and are regularly serviced each day and they are large in size. If you like Old worlde charm which isn't falling apart but beautiful big staircases and mahogany furniture than this could be the Hotel for you. Breakfast is included in the price and is a wonderful array of cold meats, cereals, jam, toast, salad vegetables, fruit, eggs, rolls, bread and so on and of course tea, coffee and juice. It has a great downstairs lounge where guests can sit and relax after a busy day's sightseeing, there is also a outdoor area where you can sit as well as another "sunroom" style lounge room. Off to the side is a fully equipped bar and a Cyber cafe, Hairdresser's, Currency exchange and Gift shop.
Unique Qualities: This Hotel is a real treasure and I was grateful to come back to it after the hussle and bussle of Cairo city. It's lounge was a great way to meet other guests and some we have kept in touch with to this day. The doorman was very helpful and we didn't mind giving him a tip as he had good general knowledge and could speak English reasonably well. The hotel is centrally located and makes a great base to get to all the Tourist attractions.

I actually didn't end up staying at the Hotel Windsor while I was there, for some reason the mossies were still lurking about but the lobby and the small eating area of the restaurant were relatively clean and tidy so I ate a meal there... Things have obviously been cleaned up alot since Michael Palin mentioned in his trip "Around the World in 80 days" because there was nothing overly spectular about this establishment while I was there except of course the plaque out the front of the Hotel with Michael's name mentioned and when he came to stay in the Hotel... The food was typically Egyptian and I remember grazing on bread, torshi (pickles) and cheese and some chickpea dish which I can not remember.. It was very simple but satisfying and we went there every now and again for a meal. As we were only staying not far from this Hotel, we did consider checking in here after the sounds of the mosque started to get a bit too much in the morning at the Victoria.. but we decided to stick it out and ended up at a similar hotel to this (I cannot remember it's name now) when the Victoria was overbooked for a few nights. This place was booked out too and was quite simply decorated compared to the Victoria Hotel that we had been accustomed to.
