Cairo memories

Egyptian memorabilia
Cairo is by far the most busiest city that I have ever been to, if I remember correctly. Cairo is home to well over 16 million people. That?s incredible to me considering my own country (New Zealand) has only 4 million inhabitants.

Cairo is an ancient city and is filled with history and adventure. I will never forget my experiences with locals who were forever asking for baksheesh (tips) from me. Even when I told them politely in Arabic La Shukran (no thank you) it still didn't help me to get rid of them. Coming in from Saudi Arabia, I would have assumed that I would be left alone, even the bloody waiter who I affectionally named Mosquito would hover around just that little bit more hoping and praying I might just give him a tip after having a Hot chocolate in the Hotel?s Lounge.

But aside from that and away from all the baksheesher?s in the world of Egypt, I managed to enjoy myself. I saw an amazing lot of history and it was a great experience to be able to visit. I was re tracing both my Grandfather's footsteps for both of them had been here during World War two. When coming back from Saudi Arabia last year to visit my family at Christmas, my surviving Grandfather Doug and I had lots to talk about, he too had learnt a bit of Arabic, his however was Egyptian Arabic and mine Syrian. Although some of the words were a little different we were able to converse with each other as if it was an unspoken language and no one in our family had a clue what we were saying!

Cons:"Baksheesh, Baksheesh, Baksheesh"
In A Nutshell:"I think my Pro's sums Cairo up!"
