Granada: the colonial jewel of Nicaragua

Colours everywhere!

Antiguo Convento San Francisco
Granada is certainly a colourful town, as you can see on these photos. Just about every building (except the churches?) is painted a bright or pastel colour.

It's got the perfect size for pedestrian exploration, but beware of the sun and heat. The best times for wandering around are a few hours after and before sunset. Only the banks and some hotels seem to have air conditioning.

As the "tourist centre" of Nicaragua, you will find numerous restaurants and cafes in Granada. It's also a good base from which you can make side trips to volcan Mombacho, Masaya, Laguna de Apoyo, and Las Isletas.

Change is coming!

I get the feeling that Granada is going to change a lot over the next few years. Already, several foreigners are opening hotels and restaurant in the town. I also heard that Granada will be getting its own airport, and that the government has allocated funds for infrastructure improvements. What this means is that it's just a matter of time before the tour groups hit it!

Pros:"Colourful, interesting, good base for excursions"
Cons:"hot"
In A Nutshell:"Skip Managua and come here directly from the airport!"

Unfortunately, Donna no longer runs Another Night in Paradise. (I just e-mailed her yesterday, and she reports that she stopped having a guesthouse a couple years ago.)
