Coz: Going with the flow (of the Yucatan Current)

by Quero - last update: Nov 15, 2004

A monument to the best of Coz--below the waves
Cozumel, Mexico's largest island, is located just off the Yucatan Peninsula, at the edge of the N. American continental shelf. It is home to a fringing reef that supports prolific fish life. And, of course, there are seemingly endless sandy beaches. With these ingredients, is it any wonder that Cozumel is a favorite among travelers who love the sea?
Av. 5a Sur

A compact resort area...

In the principal island town of San Miguel in the afternoon and evening, this street leading to the central plaza is populated by visitors looking for a bite to eat or a t-shirt to buy.
Afternoon delight

...that manages to keep a small-town ambiance

Despite the crowds of ocean liners tied in rows at the two piers dedicated to them, despite the passenger ferries coming from or bound for Cancun across the channel, despite some shops' insistence on listing their prices in US dollars, despite all this you can still see local kids frolicking in the surf at the town beach just down from the square (where the flag stands), fishermen sitting on the hulls of small boats drawn up onto the sand, mending their nets, and flirtatious teens cruising San Miguel looking for a good time.

Pros:"Very laid back beach town atmosphere"
Cons:"Often overrun by cruise ship passengers"
In A Nutshell:"Great place if you stay away from the main drag and its tourist traps"

I'll be in Cozumel due to a cruise and wasn't sure how far away Chichen Itza would be from the port? I am really interested in visiting.
