Dubai has developed into a modern world-city so recently that the traditional elements are still in evidence--and more, these elements remain at the heart of the rhythms of the city. The new skyscrapers are simply superimposed on the one-time village like a sheer veil: they don't obliterate what is underneath, but simply provide an additional layer to an already rich heritage.

Dubai is more than the city

Dubai is not only the name of the well-known city, but also the name of the emirate (one of seven that make up the United Arab Emirates). It extends 120 kilometers towards the border with Oman at the town of Hatta. Much of it is amazingly beautiful desert.
