At night the bright glow of Genting Highlands atop a hill about a 45-minute drive from KL beckons invitingly. So you make the trek, and what do you find? A denuded hilltop with a noisy, crowded, gawdy, monstrous cluster of constructions where once there was only virgin forest.
What is Genting? A place where you can go to gamble, ride on amusement park rides, play games in a video arcade, experience a fake winter with artificial snow, eat on the run, shop at the same outlets available in the city, and generally leave poorer than when you arrived--both in pocketbook and spirit.

At Least Do This: Skip the "entertainment" and head for the cable car. You'll have lots of time to take pictures as you glide over virgin rainforest.
Alternative: A better choice, if you're anxious to get away from the heat and humidity of KL, is to go further away from the capital (200 km) to Cameron Highlands. This hill resort, in addition to its appeal as a tourist destination, also boasts Malaysia's premier tea plantations. A visit to these is well worth the trip.
Another alternative is Bukit Frasier, about 100 km from KL. If you're a golfer, there's a nine-hole course. Otherwise, bring a good book and enjoy the spring-like weather.
