| A joining of rivers, centuries, traditions |
| | The muddy river junction The title gives the rough translation of the name of the city Kuala Lumpur. This juncture of the Klang and Gombek rivers is the place where the settlement that has become Malaysia's capital city first sprung up. The big draw was the tin which is plentiful under the many hills in the area. The site is occupied by the Masjid Jamek, a lovely old onion-domed mosque made of red brick with white trim.
These days the rivers are channeled, skyscrapers have sprouted up on all sides of the old mosque, the old tin town has grown to a metropolis of 2 million, and "Masjid Jamek" is a stop on the city's light rail network. |
| | Carved out of the jungle This busy capital, it's skyscrapers notwithstanding, contains pockets of jungle here and there within the confines of the city. And where there is jungle, there is wildlife. Monkeys are a common sight in residential areas, near golf courses, and on forested hillsides. And every house has its resident colony of geckos ready to feast on the mosquitoes, which in turn.... And so goes the food chain. |
