Cabo Verde Islands

by 1Kwan - last update: Feb 6, 2007

Ilha (Island) do Sal

Sal island
Last visit was June 2006.
But now it is just passing thru other islands.
My first visit was quite recent, in 96. But i was hooked, because i return every year.
The climat is warm year around. Hoter in August-September.Sal is the the Island with the international airport, so it's the most known island.
This is around an hour walk from Santa Maria. You can walk away from the hotels to desert beachs and snorkle everywere.
Pier Sal Island

Pier

The Santa Maria pier at dusk.
Mid morning will be crawling with locals and tourists as the fishing boats bring their catch. It's a must.

Fisher man

The colors are really caracteristic in Sal.
View from the pier to Santa Maria beach.
Pier Sal Island
Salinas Sal Island

Salinas

Salinas of Pedra Lume. I think you can still bathe in there. It's fun because you float like a cork. Careful with the children because the salt water hurt the eyes. Just wash it with fresh water.

Underwater

Some of the fauna underwater.
It's not the red sea, but there's plenty to see.
Most hotels have their own dive center.
I personaly meet Fernando Albano and Michael Josuttis and dived with Sting Ray Dive Center ever since.
Located in front of Hotel Odjo D'agua.
Fishes

Pier activity

Kids playing in the pier. Locals have a particular "joie de vivre"
Nothing like a drink watching the sun set from a bar by the sea after a day diving, windsurfing, surfing, fishing, connecting with people...what ever.
The more usual dishes are fresh tuna, whaoo, red grouper and lobster.

Tiger shark in the pier

Mid morning until noon small boats bring the catch of the day, mainly wahoo and tuna. Unfortunaly sometimes sharks. The activity is bloody as they prepare the fish.
