In 1397 Saint Kirill of Beloozero (St. Cyril; 1337-1427), following the advice of his teacher, Saint Sergius of Radonezh came to the Siverskoe lake and dug a cave here, where he lived for a while.
On one day praying on the top of the Kobylina Gora (Mare Mount) also known as Mount Maura he saw a fire coloumn and heard the voice of Our Lady: "Kirill, go to that place and found a monastery."
He went to that point and built a wooden Assumption chapel and a log house for monks. |
